RE: Advice on suspension Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 20:42:53 From: Brian NaumannSubject: Re: CRX: Re: Shocks To: crx@crx.org >From what I have dug through on the Koni international web page (www.koni.com) and the german Koni web page (www.koni.de), there are only two models of Koni shock absorbers readily available for 89-91 CRXs: Special - Front - 8040 1077 Rear - 8040 1158 Sport - Front - 8040 1077sport Rear - 8040 1103sport There are three different models of Koni shocks for passenger cars: Special, Sport and Classic. Special are intended "for car enthusiasts who want to raise road-holding, comfort and safety to the top level." Sport are "for those who are looking for the best handling and sport characteristics." Classic are "for owners and restorers of classic cars and cars from the 40's, 50's and 60's." In a general description of all Koni shocks, they state the following: "KONI's are adjustable, which means that you can influence the behaviour of the car to meet your preferences. It also means that wear can be compensated. (however, you will probably never need it)." Apparently they are all adjustable in some manner. I wonder whether or not they consider going as far as to disassemble the shock for the installation of new valving "adjustable." Another person replied to me in private and described this method of adjustment. > >The ones with the knob on top are Neuspeed/Koni's > >and are developed in a joint venture between Neuspeed and Koni. These are > >available through Neuspeed and its dealers only (AFAIK). > > not true. This is just a regular single adjustable koni. RD carries them, > about as cheap as anyone. Neuspeed rebadges the konis and calls them > Neuspeed/Konis, like they do for a lot of their products. (they dont really > make much, actually) I think this is what I want, a single adjustable Koni with an external knob. Who/what is RD and how do I contact them? > actually, I like the Illuminas a lot too. (have both) Here's what I heard from a guy I ran against in CSP - He had Tokico Illuminas. He went to nationals. He finished 5th or something. All the cars ahead of him were running some T.C. Kline Konis. T.C.Kline told him the reason he was behind was his shocks. He thought yeah right, you're just trying to sell me your product. He went home. He was bored so he bought and installed Konis. He says he never thought a shock absorber could make so much difference in a car's handling. Here's the conclusion I have come to: Koni only stocks 1 or 2 types of shock absorbers for each application. However, they will build to any spec you give them. Race shops / distributors have come up with a bunch of different specs for Koni to build to and have ordered in bulk amounts. Therefore there are many different styles/configurations/stiffnesses out there to be had for each application. Basically, I want to upgrade to Koni adjustable shocks with my current, stock springs for Solo II stock class. Externally adjustable would be nice. If I decide to go CSP, the Konis should work great with shorter, stiffer springs as well. ANYONE'S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH KONI SHOCKS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, part numbers and sources would be a huge bonus. Sorry to use so much bandwidth, especially you digest folks.
